MA Recordings is proud to present the 2nd
release of creative saxophonist Peter Epstein "Solus" - a unique recording of
Peter?s solo performance (recorded without audience; inside the beautiful
gothic cathedral of San Martino, located in the Medieval town of Lucca, Italy).
Rarely heard in a solo context, let alone inside an elegantly rich, acoustic environment,
such as the San Martino Cathedral, the saxophone (especially that of Peter Epstein)
proves to be as most expressive.
The first and very famous
recording of a horn inside a reverberant structure was of course Paul horn s
"Inside the Taj Mahal" recorded in the 1960's. "Solus" takes
a bold step into the musical realm that Horn pioneered, but with markedly different
and at times, modern material which includes the following:
1. Epstein?s arrangement of J.S.
Bach s Partita No. 2 in D minor for solo violin (in lieu of the Ciaccona, Peter
plays a slightly modern improvisation in the style of Bach.
2. An improvisation based on a theme
from Verdi's opera "La Forza Del Destino"
3. Originals by Epstein and Brazilian
composer Marcelo Zarvos
"Solus" offers a truly elegant aural
experience of an expertly played solitary saxophone reverberating inside an
ethereal space. As a further enhancement to the visual presentation of "Solus,"
the package includes photos taken at the recording session inside the San Martino
Cathedral, as well as one other additional image from inside the beautiful structure.
