Diana Baroni: A musician between two worlds, Diana Baroni is a flutist and singer currently appearing in the most prestigious festivals of the Baroque and World Music scenes. Originally from Argentina, she studied flute, guitar and singing. In 1985 she traveled to Europe for the first time, having been invited to participate in summer workshops at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland. She commenced her professional music career in Buenos Aires, first specializing in the contemporary repertory, notably in the productions of the Colon Theatre Experimental Centre / CEOB, Buenos Aires - Argentina, under the direction of composer Gerardo Gandini. Ms. Baroni was a founding member of the ensemble ?Halloween?, in which she played and sang the works of American avant-garde composers such as John Cage, Charles Ives and Morton Feldmann. Living in Europe since 1995, Ms. Baroni studied baroque transverse flute with Wilbert Hazelzet and early music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis - Switzerland, following the class of Jesper Christensen (Abschlusskonzert 1998). She received her Soloist Diploma (as a student of Jed Wentz) in 1999 from the the Sweelink Conservatorium in Amsterdam -The Netherlands, With Argentine violinist Pablo Valetti and French harpsichordist Céline Frisch, she created the now world famous baroque ensemble Café Zimmermann (www.cafe-zimmermann.com) with whom, since 2000, they have recorded numerous recordings for the Alpha Productions label. While living in Amsterdam (1998-2002), she met Paraguayan harpist Lincoln Almada who influenced her to again pursue her singing career. This meeting led to her discovery of the traditional music repertory. Concerts in Belgium and The Netherlands sparked Ms. Baroni?s interest and curiosity in Afro-Peruvian music of the Pacific Coast. With the group ?Sapukai? she recorded the album « Son de los Diablos », for the ?Les Chants de la terre? series on Alpha Productions (September 2003). This recording ?Flute Sonatas of J. S. Bach? (M087A) represents Diana Baroni?s first appearance on MA.

Born in Madagascar in 1975, Sarah van Cornewal spent her school days in France and has been living in Switzerland since 1994. She studied Baroque flute and recorder at renowned early music conservatoires in both Switzerland (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis) and Holland (The Royal Conservatory of the Hague). Shortly after having received an ensemble prize at the Telemann Competition in Magdeburg, she won the National Flute Association Baroque flute competition (USA) in 2007. She has performed regularly throughout Europe, Brazil, Korea and Japan, both as a soloist and also with ensembles such as Café Zimmermann, Elyma, the Modena Consort, the Duo Fue, les Ombres und Il Désidério. In addition, she has participated in various CD recordings for K617, Alpha, Marecordings, Cornetto, Ambronay, Musique Suisse and Pan Classics. Her pedagogical activities at the Conservatoire Populaire in Geneva, where she teaches the ?fife? and has lead a recorder class since 2009, are complemented by regular invitations to give Baroque flute master classes. Between 2007 and 2009, she participated in a research project directed by Thilo Hirsch which was dedicated to the instruments and repertoire of the "Grande Ecurie" at the court of Louis XIV. For this project, together with the flute-maker Boaz Berney, she was responsible for the reconstruction of the fife and its repertoire.

The album was recorded in July 2010 over the course of three hot summer days in the relatively small ?Chapelle de l?Institution des Chartreux? in the beautiful city of Lyon, France. MA?s newly acquired KORG MR2000s DSD recorder was utilized at the ultra high sampling rate of 5.6 MHz. One pair of DPA 4006 microphones was used together with custom microphone amplification built by Marcel Croese of Creato Audio (www.creatoaudio.com) Microphone cabling was Crystal Cable Ultra with line level cables by Creato Audio. The project was edited and mastered using Samplitude Master software.
